Richard Tuttle Smile

We set out using the collage cart in late October with the idea of making Richard Tuttle smile.
We looked at some of his work and we talked about a quote from his interview with Susan Canning in 2005 from Conversations on Sculpture. “Stumble along as long as you are sincere, then it’s ok.” We discussed the idea of sincerity which we defined as “to really mean it” and arrived at the conclusion that as long as we were sincere whatever we made had the possibility of making Richard Tuttle smile. Here are a few highlights from the amazing work that came out of that series.

Stetson Kennedy Presidential Portraits

Artists at Neely's Bend listened to Billy Bragg sing "Stetson Kennedy" from the Mermaid Ave project, read about Stetson Kennedy and studied Woody Guthrie with Mrs. Johnson their music teacher. We talked about how Woody Guthrie often visited Beluthehatchee and wrote songs and worked on his autobigraphy there. We talked about how Stetson Kennedy spent his life fighting for social justice. They were asked to draw a portrait of Stetson Kennedy as president.
